Mobility is valuable only when the road network, fuel plan and decision deadline make the move executable.
Design the route around constraints, not map distance
Australia's 2028 path crosses huge distances and several very different road environments. A 200 km fallback can be easy around a regional city and operationally serious in remote country. Measure drive time, road surface, fuel availability and realistic eclipse traffic rather than straight-line distance.
Keep a fuel reserve before the crowd arrives
Do not plan to arrive at a small path town with an empty tank. Eclipse traffic can overwhelm normal station throughput. In remote regions, know the vehicle's real-world range and identify more than one resupply point.
Pre-save legal candidate sites
Mark several locations inside totality before travel. Each candidate needs legal access, safe parking, a clear horizon, enough space and a route that does not depend on a gate, ferry, seasonal track or road that may be closed.
Remote does not automatically mean mobile
The Kimberley can have an excellent long-range climate signal and still offer poor last-minute mobility if access roads are slow or constrained. By contrast, Tennant Creek, Bourke or Dubbo can provide better corridor redundancy even with shorter totality.
Set a decision deadline
A Plan B should have a latest safe departure time. Once traffic builds, changing the plan can reduce rather than increase success probability. Sydney requires an especially conservative deadline because a mass movement toward inland clear sky could saturate roads.
Pack for the failed assumption
- Water, food and medication beyond the planned travel window.
- Offline maps and saved coordinates.
- Charging and backup power.
- Warm layers for early/late travel and sun protection for daytime waiting.
- Vehicle equipment appropriate to the route and road surface.
- A no-go rule for unsafe road, fire, flood or access conditions.
