Climate now · forecast later

2028 eclipse weather strategy

Use climate to choose a region, mobility to preserve options, and the short-range forecast to choose the final site.

Climatology answers a different question from a forecast

The Astronomical Society of Australia's 2028 guidance describes the north-western Australian portion of the path as having particularly favorable long-term cloud prospects. That is useful for region selection, but it does not mean a 97% chance of clear sky at Mitchell Falls or any other site. TotalityTrip's 0–100 climate field is an internal relative planning index, not a measured clear-sky probability.

North-west Australia: strong signal, hard logistics

The Kimberley combines favorable dry-season context, a high Sun and long totality. Weather strategy there cannot be separated from road and access strategy: a better forecast 250 km away is not useful if the route, vehicle, fuel or time window cannot support the move.

Inland Australia: mobility can be the advantage

Tennant Creek, Bourke, Dubbo and other inland bases can trade some maximum duration for road flexibility and services. For a mobile eclipse chaser, several realistically reachable observing zones may be more valuable than one nominally superior pin.

Sydney: do not wait too long to decide

Coastal weather is more variable and metropolitan traffic can turn an apparently short inland reposition into an impossible one. If the forecast points inland, the decision deadline should be earlier than for a lightly trafficked rural base.

New Zealand: cloud plus horizon

Queenstown and Dunedin require two checks at once: the cloud field and the western/north-western horizon. At 8–10° solar altitude, clear sky above you is not enough if terrain blocks the actual Sun.

A practical forecast ladder

  1. Months to years: use climate, access and logistics only.
  2. About a week out: watch broad synoptic consistency, but preserve alternatives.
  3. Final 72–24 hours: compare multiple forecast runs, cloud layers, wind, precipitation and road feasibility.
  4. Eclipse morning: execute a pre-planned move only if it is still safe and realistically reachable.
Avoid false precision: a long-range climate score and a day-specific forecast are not interchangeable. TotalityTrip intentionally keeps them separate.
