How to plan a resilient 2028 eclipse trip

Choose the trip structure now. Choose the exact observing coordinate much later.

1. Start with the trip archetype

The 2028 path creates fundamentally different trips. Remote north-west Australia can combine very long totality with strong dry-season climate logic, inland Australia can preserve road mobility, Sydney can simplify international logistics, and New Zealand can turn the eclipse into a South Island winter itinerary.

2. Book scarce capacity before you know the forecast

Flights, accommodation and specialist remote transport can become scarce years or months before useful eclipse-day forecasts exist. Book the scarce layer early when cancellation terms are acceptable, but avoid making every component non-refundable if your strategy depends on mobility.

3. Separate base city from final observing site

A town or city page on TotalityTrip is a planning base, not a guaranteed viewing pin. The final coordinate must be inside totality, legal and reachable, with an open eclipse-direction horizon and enough capacity for the expected traffic.

4. Build Plan A / B / C that actually differ

Three nearby car parks under the same cloud deck are not three plans. A useful backup changes exposure to forecast risk while remaining reachable before congestion or road restrictions make movement unrealistic.

5. Treat remoteness as a system constraint

For the Kimberley, Channel Country and remote Central Australia, fuel range, water, communications, road condition, medical access, vehicle suitability and official access rules can dominate the trip. A theoretical weather advantage is worthless if the fallback cannot be executed safely.

6. Treat New Zealand's low Sun as geometry, not a footnote

At the Queenstown and Dunedin benchmarks the Sun is only about 10° and 8° high at totality. Scout the actual terrain and horizon well before eclipse day; a ridge can block a clear sky.

7. Switch from climatology to forecast late

Long-range climate context helps choose regions. It cannot predict July 22, 2028. Short-range cloud, wind, precipitation and road information should control final positioning only when the event enters a credible forecast window.
