How to plan a trip for the 2027 total solar eclipse

1. Choose a region, not a single field

The August 2, 2027 path of totality crosses southern Spain and parts of North Africa and Arabia. NASA lists totality in Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. For long-range planning, choose a region with multiple reachable viewing options rather than betting the entire trip on one exact point.

2. Separate trip-base decisions from viewing-site decisions

3. Do not optimize only for seconds

4. Book for flexibility

  • Prefer cancellable or changeable accommodation where practical.
  • Avoid making your only transport option dependent on one road or one event shuttle.
  • Know your fuel, charging, parking and early-morning departure options.
  • Keep at least one fallback direction that remains inside totality.

5. Change data sources as eclipse day approaches

Months ahead, climatology helps compare broad regions. Around one to two weeks out, forecast models begin to matter. In the final 24–72 hours, cloud evolution, road access and local restrictions should dominate the decision.

Core principle: choose the country early, choose the final viewing field late.

6. Confirm safety before the trip

NASA says specialized solar viewing protection is required during the partial phases. Direct viewing without eye protection is safe only during the brief period of complete totality, when the Sun's bright face is fully covered. Read the dedicated safety page before using any optical equipment.
